Primary is the name given to the children's auxilliary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Primary consists of Sunday instruction by volunteer teachers and leaders for children aged 18 months to 12 years along with bi-monthly weekday activities for boys and girls aged 8-12. Primary meets for two hours on Sunday while older youth and adults are in their own classes. Primary children are divided into classes according to age and meet as a class for half the time on Sunday, and the other half is spent with several classes meeting together for worship, activities and music time.
Class instruction is age appropriate and based on the four standard works of scripture, including The Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon and Church History. Primary lesson manuals can be viewed online at lds.org.
Children have frequent opportunities to offer prayers, recite scriptures, and give short talks, as well as answer questions, make comments, and sing. This active participation trains children to know and express their faith, and prepares them for future leadership opportunities in the Youth programs of the church.
Four times a year fun Activity Days are held for the entire Primary on a day other than Sunday, where children can be involved in service, athletic, cultural and other activities.
A monthly children's magazine, the Friend, is published by the church.
